Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, sourdough, or your choice)
- 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, Swiss, or your choice)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions:
- Butter the Bread: Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice of bread. This will be the outside of the sandwich that gets toasted.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in a skillet or on a griddle. Add the cheese slices on top. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.
- Heat the Pan: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Grill the Sandwich: Place the sandwich in the pan and cook until the bottom slice is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt, about 3-4 minutes. Flip the sandwich and cook the other side until it is also golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, another 3-4 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from the skillet, let it cool for a minute, then slice and serve.
Variations
1. Ham and Cheese:
- Add 2-3 slices of ham along with the cheese for a more substantial sandwich.
2. Tomato and Basil:
- Add a few slices of tomato and a couple of fresh basil leaves to the cheese for a fresh, Italian-inspired twist.
3. Turkey and Avocado:
- Add sliced turkey and a few avocado slices to the sandwich. You can also add a slice of provolone or mozzarella cheese.
4. Bacon and Jalapeño:
- Add cooked bacon slices and some sliced jalapeños for a spicy, savory version.
5. Pesto and Mozzarella:
- Spread a thin layer of pesto on the inside of the bread slices and use mozzarella cheese for an herbaceous flavor.
6. Apple and Brie:
- Add thin slices of apple and brie cheese for a sweet and savory combination.
Tips:
- For an extra crispy crust, sprinkle a little grated Parmesan cheese on the buttered side of the bread before grilling.
- Use a mix of cheeses for more complex flavors.
- Press the sandwich with a spatula while grilling to ensure even toasting and melting.
